Innocence Step

September 26, 2009 surely a day I’ll never forget.

It is a routine for me, same with my classmates (I guess) to compile ourselves and burn our eyebrows in front of the computer and drawing table at ate Nanette’s house during weekends. While stepping up our requirement, our thesis proposal, I never thought that a breath breaking history will unfold the Philippines in a not- so- ordinary day. We’re much not aware that time of the news that Bagyong Ondoy was on the move to take over the metro and surrounding cities and suburban areas.

Left and right, news report said it was the worst storm to strike the country in 40 years and was equivalent of one month of rain falling within six hours. First word in my head after I heard it was “talaga?” followed by the question “ano nang mangyayari ngayon?” then everything became blank in my head, still star struck (if it’s the right words to use) while loading the stories on the television.

The result after the heavy rain and flash flood is not really a surprise, knowing the atmosphere and the laypeople’s nature; no doubt it is foreseen in the past years. This drives me to the question, when shall we be prepared on the unexpected events. Still so many reasons are continuously born and factors to consider. Who is to blame on the floods anyway?

By the time in the afternoon having no question, we just moved out on our focus and watched a Korean film entitled Innocence Step, just to refresh our minds. In spite of the boastful weather, we’re enjoying what we are watching not knowing some people outside the window are suffering- helpless. At the end of the day, the only time we found the alarums- the floodwaters indeed a chilling big picture for me to imagine and surely a traumatic experience to all the victims. The movie we merrily watched will always remind me the tragedy. Ondoy is innocent, that’s for sure. The steps that we all made in the past contribute to this event.
